It would be awesome if users could register and login with their BrowserID account. Take a look at http://www.browserid.org! This solution differs from OpenID (read: http://identity.mozilla.com/post/7669886...rom-openid ) and should be simpler to implent.

What do you think about this idea? :-)

  1. What for? If you want, you can request a plugin for that or something to tweak your own forum. It does not help in any way for the mybb script in general.

    What for? To simplify the registering process and reduce all barriers of taking part in conversations. For example: Just to post this idea here I had to register on this site with my E-Mailadress, set a password, got to my E-Mail account and finally verify my account.. This is the standard procedure and I think its even solved really pretty and simple in MyBB. BUT, it could be much simpler. As you can see here https://browserid.org/about, BrowserID by Mozilla is speeding up this process significantly. You don't even need a password. I guess most of the users here don't bother about the registering process. But you shouldn't forget that all of you are technical adepts! :-) The main street user out there isn't. You have to keep that in mind.

    Moreover if you are having a userbase across more then one platform (for example: wiki, forum, cms...) they need to register every single time if you don't merge the user database (which can be very tricky). With BrowserID it would ALMOST feel like the same user account.

    I do understand that this is probably a feature which wouldn't be used across all MyBB installations and I don't want so say that this is a must-have feature. Instead I just want to have an discussion about the sense (and nonsense! ;-) ) of this possible feature (or plugin) and the possibilities MyBB could gain out of it.

  3. To show the smallish penetration of BrowserID, I have never heard of it before. And I read the news each day on my iPad.

  4. It's brandnew and still in development. I guess till MyBB 2.0 it will gain more attraction from the media. ;-)

  5. The problem is that MyBB is going to be coded BEFORE its release. My guess is that login will be one of the first to be coded (as it is an important core function). What if BrowserID doesn't take off? Then it is pretty much code put to waste.

    You may be right about it taking off by then. But what I am saying is that if people haven't heard of it, they probably won't use it.

  6. All third-party registrations / logins (OpenID, BrowserID, Facebook Connect, etc) should be plugins. MyBB 2.0 should make such integrations easy.
