Your MyBB forum can get security, major and minor updates automatically by a button in the administrator control panel then it gets all the file changes etc... from a server from MyBB or a update script from this site to run and gives you a step by step. I think this is suitable as it will be easier than uploading all the files and it will reduce support claims and will help newbies to MyBB. You could also choose to do it manually (turn of automatic updates for people who don't need it) So you can update it yourself by using the Manually patches etc... Also It could solve many problems with files etc... but there should also be an ability to have a report created so if any sql or fatal errors come up you can just show the MyBB support team the error and they can quickly sort the error very quickly. This would be a great idea for a future version of MyBB. Cheers

This is obviously a good idea, but it's something not 100% plausible. Take for example, file differentiations between versions and errors generated by not updated plugins. How would the computer be able to generate an analysis between the two files, especially if it's modded? Computers can't 'think' at the level of humans in this era.

Didn't Chris suggest an auto-patcher at some point. I remember seeing a poll on how we would like our forums upgrading in the future.

Well I do think this is a good idea but it depends if it is plausible.
@MrDoom: Chris did suggest this a while back and the thread location is at http://community.mybboard.net/showthread.php?tid=10855. I voted for the Update service and the Manual Patch files options then, and I also said that I would like this.

i would like this as i would have to give mybb access to my ftp and even more information which if the mybb site is comprised they could get hold of hundreds of servers.
i modify some of the core files of mybb which would destroy my forum on each updates.
nice idea i principle but as tikitiki said, it is no plausible and it should stay manual updates.

Maybe it could be optional? This would allow those who want manual control, because of custom code or some other reason, to have manual control, while others with standard installs can have automatic updates.

This should give the admin the control of chossing weather to accept the update files auto or manually. so you have a choice to use it or not

It would be good if the updater just inserted the necessary patches into the files as opposed to just overwriting the old files, I have many mods in my files that I have to re-insert every time I upgrade the boards

A great idea. A must-have for modern software.

I think it should be optional as for those that don't use mods so that they don't have to fix them everytime we update our boards then we could use auto updater and not have to take time to do it manually.

Yes, we need a system that does several things that really detract from the boards as of current. An auto update system online, than we need something else to be done. The current templates and themes, the parameters from the old ones are auto transfered into the updated themes and the modified text disabled but transfered into the common area of coding where they were before. Plugins should be auto diabled during the auto update process, and one's that are found incompatible should have an asterisk next to them to be autoupdated through the new plugin manager that plugin programmers made their plugins for. This process could be streamlined acvross the board (so-to-speak) and would make owning and operating a MyBB forum a dream well beyond the one we have now...

I have an idea:
1) First the update service sends a list of changed files between your version and the latest version
2) MyBB will check all your files against a md5 to make sure they are the default. If not, then don't update them
3) Update the ones that are default by simply replacing it
4) Notify the users to update the following x files manually. Click next when ready to run the upgrade proccess
5) *Redirect to upgrade script*I think it's a plausible idea by getting rid of the differential problem, and I doubt many webmasters have lots of file edits because of the wonder plugins system!

If this idea is done, it should definitely be done using the same software as the MyBB uses to keep track of the versions, ie: using SVN (or CVS or whatever they use, however i think it's SVN). If it is not possible to integrate a SVN client in PHP so it could fetch updates and patch the running copy of MyBB, then a reliable auto-update feature is not possible and in that case i wouldn't enable any other update system, because I have modified files and don't trust any other automatic update system than SVN (or CVS or whatever...)

I think this would be brilliant. After all, with a new update of the softare, only the inc files are updated and the javascript.
Im in :) ;)

I'll be happy to see this... Make updating not so much of a pain...

SMF already has this. It would be great to have this for a forum software more powerful than SMF.

can the plug-ins be bypassed in the updating/uploading or does each one have to be loaded and installed seperately for the new forum to function, or can they be packaged as a part two version of the update of the forum ????
just a thought?? then finally activate the update afterwards, after the part two update/uploaded? -

Hopefully in the near future this will be implemented and also have a new zip plugin installer aswell with it :P
keep voting and commenting people for this bril idea

I would definately love to see this feature implemented! This would make the upgrading process much easier for the less technically inclined. :)

ChrisR, 23rd December 2008, 6:17:02 AM
you could do this by having an otion in the admincp were you put in your ftp info and when a update is out you can click a button it will get the latest as a zip and then extract the zip overwriting the needed files and then auto run the update script for the sql.

I really hope this is implemented, it would be absolutely awesome.

If it is ever implemented it better be an OPTION. I myself would much prefer to do it manually.

What if someone hacks teh MyBB site, and tells everyone there is a big update, and spreads a virus?

If you're hacked via a exploit and they gain access to the PHP files. They can make it update to infected versions of MyBB. It's a good idea but it's still hackable

I think this should rate a serious consideration for the developers to make something like this.Maybe for the 2.0 version?
-
Jagu, 27th February 2011, 4:38:28 AM
This should be a priority... because updating kinda sucks with MyBB... i would rather prefer a UPDATE NOW button and it updates automatically.

I love this idea i rly want it apply this.

kaffien, 7th September 2011, 4:11:56 PM
This really needs to be done. messing around with updates all the time is really annoying.
Check out how WordPress handles it's updates. Enter ftp password and hit upgrade .... 10 seconds later it's done. Hopefully this becomes part of the program or someone else makes a mod.
It's 2011 people! I want to be able to leave for a vacation and still be able to have another member of our group do the updates.

Malphas, 27th February 2012, 5:27:46 PM
I think every other piece of software is moving in this direction, if it doesn't already work like that. I'm not sure about the plugin situation, I don't really think plugins should work on code edits for 2.0 anyway, they should use hooks and call separate plugin files, and leave the core code unchanged.

This is one of the most needed feature.
